Để khôi phục môi trường sống đặc biệt này, dự án đã thực hiện một bước đi độc đáo là chặt hạ hàng nghìn cây thông ở khu đồn điền cũ. Tiến sĩ Deng chỉ ra rằng các hoạt động trồng rừng “phủ xanh” không hợp lý trước đây đã phá hủy hệ sinh thái cồn cát thời tiền sử, vốn đòi hỏi không gian rộng mở, đủ ánh sáng mặt trời, gió mạnh và cát trắng để duy trì sự tồn tại của loài độc đáo.

Tham gia nghiên cứu khoa học tại Canada hơn 30 năm, Tiến sĩ Đặng luôn quan tâm đến quê hương và mong muốn mang những kinh nghiệm quý báu này về Việt Nam. Đồng thời, TS Đặng cũng chủ trương khôi phục rừng nguyên sinh ở dãy Trường Sơn. Trước thực trạng trồng cây keo quy mô lớn dẫn đến thiếu đa dạng sinh học trầm trọng, ông đề nghị thay thế dần một số cây keo bằng tre và các loài cây bản địa để xây dựng các hành lang sinh thái liên thông. Tre có ưu điểm là sinh trưởng nhanh, giữ đất, giữ nước tốt, chống xói lở. Nó có thể hấp thụ một lượng lớn carbon dioxide và có thể bảo vệ hiệu quả sinh kế của người dân địa phương.
