Đội thám hiểm hang động của Hoàng gia Anh đến Việt Nam cách đây 35 năm và các nhà khoa học Việt Nam đã tiếp tục thực hiện các hoạt động khám phá, nghiên cứu hang động để cho thế giới thấy sự hùng vĩ và kỳ diệu của cảnh quan hang động Việt Nam.

Xie Hefang, Viện Cổ sinh vật học Việt Nam, người đã lâu năm tham gia nghiên cứu hang động ở Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Cà Bàn, cho biết, năm 1990, Khoa Địa chất và Địa lý của Đại học Hà Nội và Hiệp hội Hang động Hoàng gia Anh do Tiến sĩ Howard Limbert dẫn đầu đã tiến hành chuyến thám hiểm hang động chung đầu tiên và hoàn thành chuyến thám hiểm khoảng 3 km Động Phong Nha và Hang Vòm. Năm 1998, Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội giao Giáo sư Chen Yi chủ trì biên soạn hồ sơ đăng ký “Di sản thiên nhiên thế giới Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Cà Bàn”.

Tháng 7 năm 2003, Tổ chức Giáo dục, Khoa học và Văn hóa Liên hợp quốc (UNESCO) chính thức đưa Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Gai Bản vào Danh sách Di sản Thiên nhiên Thế giới. Đây là Di sản thiên nhiên thế giới thứ hai của Việt Nam sau Vịnh Hạ Long.

Tiến sĩ Howard Limbert cho biết: “Năm 2009, Đoàn thám hiểm hang động Hoàng gia Anh cuối cùng cũng có cơ hội khám phá hang động mà họ đã tìm kiếm hơn chục năm nay. Một hướng dẫn viên leo núi địa phương tên Hu Qing đã dẫn chúng tôi đến lối vào của hang động mà ông đã phát hiện vào năm 1990. Hang hiện nay có tên là Hang Sơn Đoòng), với tổng chiều dài hơn 6,5 km, cuối cùng là một bức tường khổng lồ được mệnh danh là “Vạn Lý Trường Thành của Việt Nam”. Sau khi lập bản đồ, hang động này chính thức được đưa vào danh sách. bản đồ Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Ge Bàn và được đánh giá là một trong những hang động lớn nhất thế giới.”

Đầu tháng 4/2026, đoàn thám hiểm gồm 10 chuyên gia nước ngoài, 3 chuyên gia Việt Nam và nhân viên hỗ trợ hậu cần đã đến khám phá Hang Chả Ngéo. Đoàn thám hiểm mang theo hàng ngàn mét dây thừng. Sau khi đi vào từ cửa hang, đầu tiên sẽ có một trục thẳng đứng dài khoảng 90 mét. Đoàn thám hiểm đi xuống dọc theo sợi dây và gặp phải một sườn núi đá vôi nổi bật trên đường đi. Họ khoan lỗ trên đó làm điểm tựa và lắp các bu lông mở rộng làm điểm neo để tiếp tục đi xuống sâu hơn. Khi đi xuống theo phương thẳng đứng ở độ sâu khoảng 350 mét, đoàn thám hiểm đã phát hiện ra lối đi ngang của hang.

Sau đó, đoàn thám hiểm tiến sâu gần 600m dọc theo hang chính bằng cách bơi dưới dòng sông ngầm. Trong toàn bộ chuyến thám hiểm, chỉ có hai thành viên trong nhóm chạm tới đáy hang thành công. Do nhiệt độ trong hang cực kỳ thấp và các thành viên trong nhóm không mang theo thiết bị cách nhiệt chuyên nghiệp nên hai chuyên gia không thể ở trong hang quá lâu. Ông Howard Limbert cho biết, điều đặc biệt nhất ở hang động này là nó vẫn đang được mở rộng và chưa có cuộc khảo sát toàn diện nào hoàn thành, cho thấy tiềm năng to lớn của khu vực trong việc hình thành một hệ thống hang động lớn. Nhóm thám hiểm dự định khám phá hang động lần nữa vào tháng 3 năm 2027.

Ông Phạm Hồng Cai, Giám đốc Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Ka Bản cho biết, đến nay, các chuyên gia hang động Hoàng gia Anh và Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Ka Bản đã xác nhận 7 khu vực phân bố hang động chính, với tổng số 472 hang động được ghi nhận và phát hiện, với tổng chiều dài khảo sát hơn 254 km, đưa khu vực này trở thành một trong những hệ thống hang động phong phú và độc đáo nhất (KARST) trên thế giới, đồng thời được mệnh danh là “Vương quốc hang động”.

Trong chuyến thám hiểm được thực hiện vào đầu năm 2026, một nhóm chuyên gia hang động do Tiến sĩ Howard Limbert dẫn đầu đã khảo sát tổng cộng 29 hang động, trong đó có 26 hang động mới được phát hiện và 3 phần mở rộng của các hang động đã biết, với chiều dài bản đồ tích lũy hơn 13,6 km. Kết quả của chuyến thám hiểm này đã bổ sung những nội dung quan trọng vào cơ sở dữ liệu hang động của Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Ka Bàn, đồng thời một lần nữa chứng minh giá trị vượt trội của khu vực về mặt địa chất, địa mạo và hệ thống núi đá vôi.

Chuyên gia du lịch Nguyễn Châu Ya cho biết, trong 35 năm qua, dưới sự chỉ đạo của Tiến sĩ Howard Limbert và nhóm của ông không ngừng khám phá, điều tra hang động, du lịch khám phá hang động ở tỉnh Quảng Trị đã đạt được những kết quả phát triển quan trọng. Fengya-Daiban đã trở thành địa điểm du lịch khám phá hang động lớn nhất thế giới, đón gần 50.000 khách du lịch mỗi năm. Hiện nay, khoảng 15 loại sản phẩm du lịch khám phá hang động đã được triển khai tại địa phương, với hành trình từ 1 đến 5 ngày, mức độ khó từ sơ cấp đến nâng cao. Sản phẩm du lịch này tạo ra doanh thu hoạt động hơn 300 tỷ đồng mỗi năm.
